What is the TimberNook experience?
When your child joins TimberNook Orlando, you’ll quickly realize it’s not your typical nature program. We weave the therapeutic aspects of nature with a unique understanding of child development, using the environment as inspiration for creative play opportunities that challenge the mind, body, and the senses.
Providers and parents alike speak often of the “magic” they witness at TimberNook… even over the course of a single week. When children are given opportunities to make their own choices as they play, the learning and growth that follow are nothing short of magical.
Ideally, you’ll witness this magic in person as your child excitedly relives their day at camp with you. But until then, here’s what some members of the TimberNook Orlando community have to say:
Freedom to Play, Explore, and Create.
All living things, children included, learn through playing. And if we want true growth and learning to take place we must give children the space and opportunities to do so.
That’s why the adults take a step back at TimberNook, and why children feel empowered to make their own decisions and take age-appropriate risks as they play outside. We keep a watchful eye, but the kids are the ones calling the shots as they create their own play experiences.
More Opportunities to Learn, Connect With Nature, and Grow.
Every TimberNook camp has a different theme or focus, but every child engages all of their senses while running around outside.
They’ll feel the mud squish between their toes. They’ll learn what types of things float and which things sink as they play near water. They might test their strength during a game of tug ‘o war, or learn how to identify different bugs and plants on a romp through the woods.
Teaching Meaningful Skills That Last a Lifetime
It’s all fun and games, but that doesn’t mean your child isn’t learning. Recycling and protecting our planet, how to care for a pet dog responsibly, how to solve problems independently… TimberNook kids are always learning new skills that they’ll carry with them for life, and each TimberNook experience is thoughtfully designed with fun and learning in mind.

How It Works: The TimberNook Experience
When children play with TimberNook, they learn and grow at the same time. Each program begins with a unique TimberNook experience before campers run off to play in their own ways.
We might read a book and then act the story out in the woods, like we did for Going on a Bear Hunt. After reading the book, campers made maps of the places in the story, then followed the maps all through the woods. There was also a lot of playing in the mud, as you can see here!
Or, we might get in touch with our artsy sides after spending time with newborn puppies… that’s what Extreme Art campers did. After learning about socialization and spending time with the pups, we went on a scavenger hunt to find things for a big art project: “willow whack painting”. Some campers played in the canoe, others painted or visited the mud kitchen, and some of us painted on smaller canvases with mud and markers and anything else we could find. (You’ll definitely want to have a look at those photos!)
As you can see, there’s structure – but each child is also able to choose their own adventure. Whether they play in the mud, paint in the woods, or do something else entirely, they’re constantly learning while having fun.
There’s even science behind all of the fun we’re having at TimberNook. Our Orlando camps combine an understanding of child development with the therapeutic aspects of nature. These outdoor programs support every aspect of the growing child. Read more….

How Will TimberNook Help My Child Learn and Grow?
Children can learn so much through play, especially when that play takes place outdoors.
That’s because nature provides just the right amount of sensory stimulation – not too much and not too little. Nature doesn’t bombard children with too much sensory information at once, which creates a sense of chaos and confusion.
This leads to a calm yet alert state, where children are better able to process the sensory information around them. As these puzzle pieces start fitting together inside a child’s mind, they can form a more accurate picture of the world around them and their role in that world.
Don’t just take our word for it, though. Read more….
Who Is TimberNook Orlando?
The TimberNook Orlando team is full of drastic change makers. Our Play Professors bring their unique backgrounds to child-led learning and unstructured play. They understand the science of behavior change, learning, and the important role the environment plays in behavior and learning.
Our Play Professors embrace the richness of the outdoors and their work with children reflects it. They harness the power of an “I can do it!” attitude, allowing children the opportunity to lead their own curiosity and learning.
